Aalto. Birth of a University
Book design
The book written by Merina Salminen and published by Teos-kustantamo depicts the story of the birth of Aalto University. It was a merger of three major Finnish universities: the Helsinki University of Technology. the Helsinki School of Economics and the University of Art and Design Helsinki. The cover design how these very distinct Universities start fusing together.
I designed a unique structure that combined old book binding traditions in a novel way—this resonated well with how Aalto University came to be.
There are small hidden details to be discovered, concealed in the design of the book.
The manuscript was solely text—I added visual interest with illustrations that played with the narrative and the word aalto, which means wave in Finnish.
